Thomas Dolan

The Phoenix Lofts

Thomas Dolan is an architect, development consultant, and developer who has pioneered a new infill building type: the live/work courtyard community built from the ground up (historically, live/work projects have been renovations). The work of Thomas Dolan Architecture, a twelve-person firm based in Oakland, includes the first newly constructed live/work in the U.S., and the first such projects of their kind in Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, and Sonoma, a number of which have received design awards. As development and code consultants, the firm has worked with a number of cities in North America to create live/work planning and building codes, including Vancouver, B.C. and Oakland, California.

Live/Work in Plain English, written by Dolan, provides a guide to Oakland¹s live/work codes and the development and approval process for live/work projects in the city. Thomas Dolan is also the founder and President of The Live/Work Institute, an organization devoted to the new land use and inherently mixed-use building type, sometimes called “Zero Commute Housing.™” A Charter member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, Tom is presently working on a book about live/work in collaboration with Andres Duany, one of the founders of that movement.
