Nearly $30 million could be available to Bay Area cities and counties this spring to build livable neighborhoods as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Transportation for Livable Communities program. UE is reviewing the seven-year-old TLC program as a member of MTC’s Citizen Advisory Council, suggesting how the program can better encourage pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly streets in low-income areas. In related work, MTC is considering a new program to encourage cities to undertake specific plans for transit centers and corridors. UE supports the idea, as specific plans would enable cities to take a larger view of how to balance neighborhoods’ needs for housing, jobs and transportation.
