Linking land use patterns to healthy lifestyles is increasingly important, especially in low-income areas where access to parks is often limited. UE is addressing this issue by designing and advocating for a green recreational corridor in East Oakland that will link schools, parks, and neighborhood commercial districts. Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s competitive Active Living by Design program, the project joins up UE and the East Bay Asian Youth Center with a host of other partners interested in creating healthier lifestyles for local residents. The project is one of 25 selected nationwide from nearly 1,000 applicants.
