The John Stewart Company (JSCo.) develops, owns, and manages both affordable and market-rate properties in the Bay Area and throughout California. Currently, JSCo. is developing (investing, rehabilitating, marketing and managing) over 600 former Navy housing apartments on Treasure Island under the aegis of a leasehold interest with the Treasure Island Development Authority of San Francisco. This is one of the last pieces of developable open land in San Francisco and will allow its residents easy access to both Oakland and downtown San Francisco. The residential area is joining movie studios, a marina, an elementary school and other uses to create San Francisco’s newest neighborhood. Additionally, the firm is marketing and managing over 900 multi- and single-family family units at the Presidio in San Francisco, many of which are on the National Register of Historic Plans.

JSCo. is also responsible for the success of Mercy Family Plaza. Formerly four hospital outbuildings, Mercy Family Plaza in San Francisco has been converted to 36 units of affordable housing. Built between 1907 and 1930, and left vacant for 17 years, the buildings required extensive renovation, seismic strengthening, and were carefully rehabilitated to meet state historic preservation requirements. The dual goal of affordable housing and historic preservation meant a complex financing arrangement that tapped ten separate sources. Mercy Family Plaza was fully leased before completion, and has since had a waiting list.
